See the full story · 4 sourcesTV has one less streaming comedy about South Asian failsons learning to run the family drug business while their Auntie kicks unbelievable amounts of ass today, as Deadline reports that Hulu has canceled its two-season series Deli Boys . And while this news is not wholly surprising—fully healthy TV shows that their networks or streamers are excited about don’t usually wait three months after their season finales air to hear about their fates—it is a bummer, given what a fast-paced, frequently funny series Deli Boys could be.
Created by Abdullah Saeed, the show starred Asif Ali and Saagar Shaikh as the Dar Boys in question, and then most especially starred Poorna Jagannathan as their “Auntie,” Lucky, a confidante of their late father who is forced to swiftly indoctrinate these two dummies into the fact that the majority of their family money comes from drug sales. The result was a comedy series that offered up a particularly potent blend of criminal grittiness and sheer silliness—exemplified in a standout season two episode where Lucky and her new beau, a shady money launderer played by Fred Armisen, pull guns on their couples counsellor so they can really dial into the issues in their relationships. Of course, that episode arrived in the midst of a second season that had had its episode order cut back to the bone, but Hulu did seem interested in giving the series a strong marketing push, so fans may have been forgiven for holding out hope. (Especially as Jagannathan is presumably about to get a big dose of new interest courtesy of her recurring role on HBO’s new Lanterns series.)
But, nope: No official statement has been made (including from Saeed, who hasn’t commented on the cancellation on social media yet), but Deadline reports a source saying that the series’ ratings simply weren’t high enough to keep going. Which means we’re never going to find out what was going on with that poisoned pie in the series finale, or see how intimidating Jagannathan was going to get to be all over again as the concept of an “eldest Dar” was cliffhangered into the show in what will now be its final moments. Like we said: A bummer.
