MECHANICSVILLE, Maryland : Hunter Lawrence got a strong start while Jett Lawrence struggled off the gate—and for most of Moto 1 of the Budds Creek National the points lead swapped in Hunter's favor.
As quickly as he lost points last week in Unadilla, Hunter regained them. Jett was as far back as 22nd at one point in the race, but he kept his head and charged back to fifth.
Haiden Deegan earned the holeshot, his third consecutive, but a slight mistake on the opening lap allowed Hunter to get around and set the pace. Deegan kept Hunter honest as he worked his way through traffic well.
Eli Tomac looked like the "Eli" of old, He was solid in practice and converted a strong start to settle into a podium position in the opening laps. Midway through the race, Tomac lost the final podium position to teammate Jorge Prado.

Jett lined up to the far inside, just like the 250 points leaders Levi Kitchen, he also got pushed to the inside. Jett ran inside two markers before getting pinched off and and lost a ton of ground. Jett fell back to 18th on Lap 1, lost another several spots on the cusp of Laps 1 and 2.
Jett was penalized one license point for his off-track excursion. Mike Pelletier of the AMA explained that Jett did not gain a competitive advantage, which is why he was not penalized positions. Kitchen was docked four spots in 250 Moto 1 .
Championships are won on a rider's bad days and Jett's fifth-place result could make the difference at the end of the Ironman National next week.
Garrett Marchbanks held a top five position for a sizeable portion of the moto, but he fell toward the end and handed the position back to Cooper Webb. Jett passed Webb just before time ran off the clock.
