Breaking down South Dakota Prep Media football polls for Aug. 24: Cavaliers climb to No. 2 in Class 9AA
Aug. 24—TYNDALL, S.D. — Preseason ranked teams went 18-2 in the first week of South Dakota high school football action, and with both losses coming in Class 9AA, teams are on the move.
Bon Homme and Platte-Geddes are among those ascending in the rankings, moving to No. 2 and No. 3, respectively, in the latest South Dakota Prep Media football poll released Monday.
Preseason No. 2 Hamlin and No. 5 Bridgewater-Emery/Ethan both lost to spur the changes. Meanwhile, Bon Homme stomped Stanley County 48-0 to open the season, and Platte-Geddes raced past Tripp-Delmont/Armour/Andes Central/Dakota Christian 43-8. The Cavaliers and Black Panthers each climbed one spot from their preseason rankings.
Parkston held firm as the now-unanimous No. 1 with all 19 available first-place votes, and Hamlin slipped three spots to No. 5 after losing 46-34 to Class 9A No. 5 Castlewood. Viborg-Hurley entered the poll at No. 4 after being the team to upend BEE 22-8 in the opener.
* Castlewood's victory over Hamlin vaulted the Warriors past Elkton-Lake Benton and Kimball/White Lake to the No. 3 spot in the Class 9A rankings. Both the Elks and Wildkats rolled to big wins in their openers.
* The gap between Class 11B No. 1 Elk Point-Jefferson and No. 2 St. Thomas More is a single point. EPJ defeated McCook Central/Montrose 28-13 last week, while STM blew out Mobridge-Pollock 41-6.
* Class 9B No. 1 Dell Rapids St. Mary has opened up a 14-point cushion on No. 2 Wall in the rankings after it was just two points in the preseason. DRSM crushed Deubrook Area to start the year, while Wall escaped an upset at Bennett County.
* Between Classes 11B, 9AA and 9A, there were 18 total programs outside their respective top-five rankings that received votes. Just one week in, that pool has been slashed to seven teams.
The South Dakota Prep Media football polls released Aug. 24 are listed below, ranking the top five teams in each class, record and total points. First-place votes received are indicated in parentheses. (Note: Classes 11AAA, 11AA and 11A are unchanged from the Aug. 17 preseason poll since those divisions did not play last week.)
