Ryan Day has spent a decade learning that success at Ohio State rarely provides much relief.
The Buckeyes have gone 82-12 with Day on the coaching staff, won two Big Ten championships and finished every season inside the top 10. They have produced a pipeline of first-round quarterbacks and receivers while becoming one of the most explosive offensive programs in college football.
Day also has won a national championship, the achievement that ultimately quieted serious questions about whether he was the right person to lead Ohio State.
Yet the pressure has never disappeared.
Day is entering his 10th year with the Buckeyes and eighth season as their permanent head coach. An ESPN feature by Adam Rittenberg explored how Day has evolved, endured and succeeded in one of the most demanding jobs in American sports. His experience could prove critical in 2026, when Ohio State will attempt to navigate one of the toughest schedules in program history and compete for Day’s second national championship.
Ryan Day has changed during 10 years at Ohio State
Day was 37 years old and relatively unknown nationally when Urban Meyer brought him to Columbus in 2017. He had experience as an offensive coordinator at Temple and Boston College and coached quarterbacks for Chip Kelly with the Philadelphia Eagles and San Francisco 49ers. He had never been a head coach.
Now 47, Day has spent much of his adult life inside the Ohio State football program. His children have grown up in Ohio, and his youngest daughter has known no other home. The job has left its mark.
Rutgers coach Greg Schiano, who worked alongside Day at Ohio State, described the program as a “pressure cooker” and acknowledged that his former colleague sometimes sounds exhausted.
That pressure is a product of Ohio State’s expectations.
The Buckeyes are expected to beat Michigan, win the Big Ten, recruit at an elite level, develop NFL players and compete for a national championship every season. Winning 11 games is treated as the minimum rather than an accomplishment.
Day has learned to navigate those demands without allowing them to overwhelm the program.
Former Ohio State athletic director Gene Smith told ESPN that Day’s ability to survive the scrutiny demonstrates an internal toughness that is not always visible publicly. That resilience became most apparent when Day’s tenure reached its lowest point.
Michigan loss nearly changed everything for Day
Ohio State entered its 2024 rivalry game against Michigan as a 19.5-point favorite. The Buckeyes lost 13-10 at Ohio Stadium.
It was Day’s fourth consecutive defeat against Michigan and prompted an extraordinary backlash. Fans called for his firing, and Day revealed that members of his family received threats. A postgame confrontation added to the humiliation. Michigan players attempted to plant their flag at midfield, leading to a physical altercation involving players from both teams.
Ohio State still had a place in the expanded College Football Playoff, but Day’s future appeared to depend on what happened next.
His response changed the direction of his career. Day met with his players and listened as frustrations poured out. He then secluded himself inside the Woody Hayes Athletic Center, spending weeks designing postseason plans for Tennessee and Oregon.
Ohio State responded by overwhelming Tennessee in the first round and routing unbeaten Oregon in the Rose Bowl. The Buckeyes then defeated Texas before delivering a balanced offensive performance against Notre Dame in the national championship game.
Four victories transformed a season that appeared broken into Ohio State’s first national title since 2014.
Day had survived the worst moment of his tenure by producing its greatest accomplishment.
Day rebuilt Ohio State’s offensive identity
Ohio State’s offense was searching for answers when Day arrived. The Buckeyes ranked 81st nationally in passing during the season before his hiring. They had not produced a first-round NFL draft pick at quarterback since 1982.
Dwayne Haskins changed that trajectory in Day’s second year on staff. Haskins passed for 4,831 yards and 50 touchdowns in 2018, rewriting Ohio State’s single-season record book. Washington selected him with the No. 15 pick in the following NFL Draft.
Justin Fields and C.J. Stroud later became first-round selections. Ohio State also has produced six first-round receivers over the past five drafts.
Before Day arrived, the Buckeyes had two 3,000-yard passers in program history and none who had reached 4,000 yards. Ohio State has produced a 3,000-yard passer in each of its past eight full seasons, with three surpassing 4,000 yards.
Since 2017, Ohio State leads the nation in scoring average, total QBR and passing touchdowns, according to ESPN. Co-offensive coordinator Keenan Bailey credited Day with changing the way Big Ten teams score points.
That transformation helped Day earn the permanent job when Meyer retired after the 2018 season.
Ohio State gave first-time coach an enormous responsibility
Promoting Day carried substantial risk. Ohio State had not hired a first-time head coach since Paul Bixler in 1946. Bixler resigned after one season.
Day received the opportunity partly because the Buckeyes wanted continuity after Meyer went 83-9. He already understood the roster, staff and expectations after two seasons as an assistant.
Former athletic director Gene Smith also saw qualities beyond Day’s offensive knowledge. Day connected with players, coaches, recruits and employees throughout the athletic department. Former Ohio State coach Jim Tressel called Day’s ability to grow into the job “extraordinary.”
