Cristián Romero completes Atlético Madrid transfer
Atlético de Madrid have confirmed the signing of Cristian Romero from Tottenham, with the Argentina international agreeing a contract that will keep him at the Spanish club until June 2031.
The 28-year-old defender joins for a fee reported to be around £34.2 million (€40m), bringing an end to his five-year spell in north London. Romero arrived at Tottenham from Atalanta in 2021, initially on loan, before making the transfer permanent.
During his time with Spurs, the centre-back established himself as a key figure in the defence, making 156 appearances and scoring 13 goals. His biggest success came in the 2024-25 campaign, when Tottenham lifted the Europa League after beating Manchester United in the final.
His final appearance for Tottenham came against Sunderland in April. He was forced off with a knee problem and subsequently missed the club’s remaining six Premier League matches.
Atlético had previously shown interest in Romero, but a move failed to materialise last summer. This time, the Madrid club reached an agreement and Romero completed his medical before signing at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano.
