According to a report from Bild (as captured by @iMiaSanMia ), Bayern Munich’s preseason schedule appears to be getting one final addition. With several first-team players returning later than the rest of the squad following their extended summer break, Vincent Kompany reportedly wanted another opportunity to get everyone up to speed before competitive action begins. According to reports, Bayern Munich has now arranged an additional friendly against 1. FC Heidenheim on August 18th, with the match set to be played away in the early evening.
The thinking behind the decision is straightforward. Many of Bayern Munich’s international players will miss the club’s Asia tour due to their delayed return, leaving them with limited opportunities to build match fitness before the season officially kicks off. Rather than throwing those players directly into the Franz Beckenbauer Supercup against Borussia Dortmund, Kompany wanted another competitive test to help close the gap.
The reports also credit sporting director Christoph Freund for making the fixture happen. Freund reportedly contacted several clubs before reaching an agreement with Heidenheim, giving Bayern Munich exactly the type of opponent Kompany was looking for on relatively short notice.
From a sporting perspective, the extra match makes plenty of sense. It allows Kompany to further integrate returning internationals, continue building chemistry with Bayern Munich’s summer signings, and fine-tune tactical adjustments without the pressure of a competitive fixture. It also provides valuable minutes for players who may still be working their way back to peak fitness after the World Cup.
With the Supercup against Borussia Dortmund just days later, every minute on the pitch could prove valuable. Rather than entering the season with part of the squad lacking match rhythm, Bayern Munich appears determined to ensure the entire group is as prepared as possible. If finalized, the trip to Heidenheim should serve as one final dress rehearsal before Kompany’s side begins its pursuit of silverware in the 2026/27 campaign.
