A's pitcher Jack Perkins threw a 95-mph fastball in on the hands of Curtis Mead in the fourth inning of the Boston Red Sox 's game in West Sacramento on July 27.
Mead was playing his first game for Boston following a stunning trade that sent pitcher Connelly Early to the Washington Nationals . The pitch hit Mead on the wrist, ending his Red Sox debut prematurely.
X-rays after the game were negative. However, the Red Sox placed Mead on the injured list July 28.
According to Tommy Cassell of the Telegram & Gazette, Mead has a broken wrist. In the interim, the Red Sox called up utility infielder Nick Sogard from Triple-A Worcester to join the Red Sox in West Sacramento.
It's an opportunity for Sogard, a Sacramento native, but a setback for Boston. Sogard, 28, has a career .667 OPS in 73 MLB games with the Red Sox from 2024-26. It's telling that he was their best option.
Veteran infielder Trevor Story hasn’t played since May 14 due to surgery to repair a sports hernia. He has yet to be cleared for a minor league rehabilitation assignment.
Kristian Campbell signed an eight-year, $60 million contract extension with Boston in April 2025. The 24-year-old has a .709 OPS for Triple-A Worcester, and has yet to play an MLB this season.

The circumstances suddenly raise the question of whether the Red Sox should deal for yet another infielder before the Aug. 3 trade deadline.
Boston was left for dead, and potentially in position to trade established players for prospects, as recently as a month ago. But after rattling off 15 straight wins around the All-Star break, they found themselves five games over .500 (55-50) when the beat the A's on July 27.

Second baseman Luis Arraez could be a fit. The San Francisco Giants have fallen out of contention, and were able to take Rafael Devers off the Red Sox's shoulders in a blockbuster trade last year. Arraez is a four-time All-Star who has dramatically improved his fielding at second base this season.
But the Red Sox would face a dilemma around where to play him once Mead returns. They would face a similar dilemma if they were to acquire a shortstop who would potentially compete with Story for playing time if both are healthy.
It's an unenviable position for Boston's Chief Baseball Officer, Craig Breslow, who was already facing questions about potentially overpaying to get Mead .
Regardless, the Red Sox once again find themselves with a big hole in the middle infield as the trade deadline approaches.
