Former Indiana star quarterback Fernando Mendoza is well aware of the benefits and problems associated with athletes benefitting from their name, image and likeness.
The reigning Heisman Trophy winner and national champion cautioned athletes considering a potential transfer or their first college choice to examine the best opportunity for them, rather than just focusing on the size of the check headed their way.
“I believe that you need to put the opportunity before the check size,” Mendoza told On3Sports . “That’s something that I stood by and something that I did in my transfer portal process. Indiana was not the highest bidder. However, I saw the greatest opportunity and I believed in the coaching staff, believed in my teammates and believed in the great culture there at Indiana."

Mendoza suggested that during his move to Indiana, money was around the fourth or fifth motivating factor when deciding his potential landing spot.
“That was something that ended up paying off in the long-term especially with the opportunity, being able to go there, a great system that fit me. Those were all things on my list, and I believe that money was around maybe the fifth variable or the fourth variable, I believe.”
It's difficult to argue with Mendoza's point considering he vaulted to the top of the NFL draft, won the Heisman Trophy and led the Hoosiers to an improbable national championship run.
