Though it wasn't pretty, Sasaki continued to show flashes from his previous two starts, striking out seven in 5.1 innings en route to the Los Angeles Dodgers' 6-2 series win over the Seattle Mariners .
Sasaki cruised through the first five innings. The velocity on his fastball was 1.3 mph faster than his season average (99.1), and the splitter was his most effective put-away pitch.
He registered four strikeouts on his splitter alone and recorded a 45% whiff. Even with the 18 swing-and-miss strikes, the Mariners were patient and waited to strike on the right-hander until the sixth inning.
Seattle second baseman Cole Young led off the sixth inning with a double-turned-triple after Andy Pages botched a cutoff in center field. Randy Arozarena jumped on Sasaki's first-pitch slider for an RBI double that put the Mariners on the board.
The command started to dwindle for Sasaki, so much so that he walked the next batter he faced (Dominic Canzone) on four straight pitches and a single from Josh Naylor loaded the bases.
This series of unfortunate events invoked a mound visit from pitching coach Mark Prior, but Sasaki would walk in the Mariners' second run of the game via a Cal Raleigh five-pitch walk.
With his third walk of the night, that initiated manager Dave Roberts to step out from the dugout steps to retrieve Sasaki from the game. He promptly received a standing ovation from the fans at Dodger Stadium for his efforts on the mound as he walked back to rejoin the rest of his Dodgers teammates.
Whether it's the bigger glove that he transitioned to, which resembles a school bus, or the cleaned-up mechanics, whatever Sasaki has going is working.
Jack Dreyer was assigned to clean the table for Sasaki and managed to do so on just four pitches.
On a day in which the Dodgers did not have Shohei Ohtani due to a sore left knee, Los Angeles utilized the long ball in their series victory.
They hit a pair brought to you by a three-run shot from Dalton Rushing in the fifth inning and a Teoscar Hernández solo shot in the sixth inning.
With the win, the Dodgers improve to 69-40, and their fourth consecutive series victory coming out of the break.
