WORCESTER — As Roman Anthony hammered a home run over the right-field wall during a rehab stint with Triple-A Worcester Tuesday night, the scene looked eerily similar to the last homer he hit at Polar Park on June 7, 2025.
“It kind of brings back like the flashback of the big home run he hit last year that landed on the street,” WooSox acting manager Iggy Suarez said. “… How it lines up like that is ridiculous, you know? And it’s pretty cool.”
Following Anthony ’s signature homer in 2025 — that traveled 497 feet — the outfielder received his first big-league call up to join the Boston Red Sox two days later.
Fast forward to this season, with Anthony (finger) rumored to most likely wrap up his rehab assignment following Worcester’s game Wednesday, and the parallels continue.
“It’s great to be back here. It almost feels like I’m going up the system again,” Anthony said in a pregame media scrum Tuesday. “… I’m to a point now where week two (of my rehab assignment), I’m looking forward to getting back into a big-league game as soon as possible.”
While Anthony is still here in the Canal District, let’s look at some of his top moments with the WooSox.
Big 3 press conference
Anthony, Marcelo Mayer and Kyle Teel — dubbed the “Big 3” as the Red Sox’ top three prospects at the time — held a joint press conference at Polar Park on Aug. 13, 2024, to commemorate their call up to AAA.
“The dream is to get here, and it’s another step along the way, but it was nice getting called (up),” Anthony said at the time. “… Obviously, as you go up, there's more expectations, more cameras, as we can see right now, but nothing changes.
“We’re just going to go out there and have fun and continue to play the game right away, and everything has to take care of itself.”
Anthony hit the ground running in AAA in 2024, hitting .344 with 3 HR, 20 RBIs and a .982 OPS across 35 games. He was named the No. 1 prospect in baseball by the end of the season .
The homer heard round Worcester
To kick off the 2025 season, Anthony continued to torch Triple-A pitching — which had many fans and pundits clamoring for his call up to Boston.
But it wasn’t until his majestic moonshot on June 7, 2025, when Anthony hit a 497-foot grand slam at Polar Park that Anthony finally put any discussion of him needing more seasoning in the minors to bed.
“Got it and didn’t really miss it,” Anthony told the T&G of his HR at the time. “So, it felt great.”
Asked where that homer ranked among his top hits with Worcester, Anthony didn’t hesitate.
“That’s probably it right there,” he said.
Shipping up to Boston
Originally scheduled to travel to Lehigh Valley for a six-game series in Pennsylvania two days after his 497-foot homer last year, Anthony received word before boarding the WooSox team bus that he was headed 45 miles east to join the Boston Red Sox .
Surprise.
“From there on out, it’s been a little bit of a blur,” Anthony told the media in a pregame scrum inside the Red Sox dugout later that day. “But it was amazing. You dream of that every single day, so to finally hear it, it was awesome.”
Anthony then spent the rest of the 2025 season with Boston, hitting .292 with 8 HR, 32 RBIs in 71 games. He signed an eight-year, $130 million contract extension with the Red Sox on Aug. 6, 2025 before he finished the season on the injured list with an oblique strain.
Anthony struggled to start this season with the Red Sox, hitting .229 with 1 HR and 5 RBIs in 30 games before landing on the injured list on May 7 (retroactive May 5) with a torn ligament in the ring finger on his right hand.
The 22-year-old outfielder began a rehab stint with Double-A Portland last week before joining Triple-A Worcester on Tuesday.
Ironically enough, the Worcester Red Sox hung a home plate beyond the right-field wall near the spot where Anthony's 497-foot HR landed to commemorate the moment before he hit his latest Polar Park round-tripper later that day.
“Parallels. It’s cool to see,” Suarez said. “To see Roman in the box again, it does bring back flashbacks like it’s 2025 again.”
“A lot of great memories,” Anthony said.
And following a 0 for 4 hitting performance on Wednesday, Anthony hopes his 2026 journey closely mirrors that of last season’s with a call up to (re)join the Red Sox.
“I’m excited to get back up there,” Anthony said.
