The snake bitten Red Sox's latest example of a hopeful outlook turning more serious came when new acquisition Curtis Mead was found to have broken his wrist , as reported by Tommy Cassell of the Worcester Telegram & Gazette. He heads to the 10-day injured list, although that would be a fairly incredible recuperation window for a broken bone.
Once again, a player will miss time with an injury the Red Sox originally said was minor.
Ace lefthander Garrett Crochet and star outfielder Roman Anthony have been on the shelf since April and May, respectively, with maladies that were initially expected to keep them out for just a few days. Mead's loss is a harsh blow because he had just joined the team via a trade that sent popular young pitcher Connelly Early to the Washington Nationals.
The Red Sox, who thought they had nabbed the extra infield bat they coveted for a playoff push, now have to pivot with less than a week to go until Monday's MLB trade deadline and at least a week and a half with Mead on the bench. While 10 days might not seem like for reason to panic, there's no reason to believe Mead's return will be so swift, considering the Red Sox's recent track record.
Nick Sogard replaced Mead on the roster, and veteran infielders Trevor Story and Isiah Kiner-Falefa are due back soon. At least, that's what the Red Sox say.
