The Detroit Lions running back missed Wednesday’s opening training camp practice as he awaits a potential extension. When Campbell addressed the situation Thursday morning, he made it clear that he remains confident the business side will eventually be settled.
“You guys know how I feel, how we all feel about Gibbs, and what the team feels about him. I’ll leave it at that,” Campbell said. “All the other stuff? My job is to coach who’s out there right now. I love the kid, but I have a team to coach right now. And listen, at some point, it’ll get done. It’s gonna get done, I’m not even sweating it.”
Campbell did note that Gibbs did a conditioning test before training camp, and he did have a little bit of a back issue.
Campbell Trusts the Contract Process
Gibbs reported to training camp but has not practiced, making this a hold-in rather than a full holdout.
His presence allows him to attend meetings and remain connected to the team while avoiding the injury risk that comes with practicing before a new agreement is reached.
Campbell’s comments suggest there is no growing frustration between the Lions and their star running back. He did not criticize Gibbs, question his commitment or attempt to pressure him publicly.
Instead, Campbell separated the negotiation from his responsibility on the field.
His job is to coach the players practicing. Brad Holmes and Gibbs’ representatives will handle everything else.

Campbell’s words also reinforced how highly Detroit values Gibbs.
“I love the kid,” Campbell said.
The Lions have built their offense around Gibbs’ rare combination of speed, vision and receiving ability. With an even larger role expected in 2026, Gibbs has a strong case for a contract that places him at or near the top of the running back market.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter previously reported that a new agreement could be completed within the next couple of weeks.
For now, Campbell appears willing to let that process play out without creating unnecessary drama.
