July 30 (UPI) -- Former Green Bay Packers running back Ahman Green was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease, he announced.
Green, 49, made the announcement on an episode of the Go Long podcast , which was published Wednesday. The 12-year NFL veteran was diagnosed with the progressive brain disorder in 2025.
"Last year, I got diagnosed with early-onset Parkinson's," Green said. "I had a little bit of the feet twitching when I'm in my sleep and stuff like that. I knew something was going on long before that.
I just got ahold of some doctors that I was able to get in contact with, get the diagnostics, get the testing, and finally got it tested last -- it was January of 2025. I didn't share it for a long time because I wanted to let my kids know, my family."
Green has four daughters and a son. He said he is focused on nutrition and working out, in addition to taking medication, to fight the disease.

Short-term memory loss and walking and talking in his sleep are among his symptoms.
Green, a third-round pick in the 1998 NFL Draft by the Seattle Seahawks, spent eight seasons with the Packers. He also spent two seasons with the Houston Texans. The four-time Pro Bowl selection retired from football in 2011.

He is the Packers' all-time leading rusher, with 8,322 yards. His 54 rushing touchdowns are second in franchise history, behind Jim Taylor's 81.
Fellow Packers legend Brett Favre, who was teammates with Green for seven seasons, announced in 2024 that he also was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease.

Green said he planned to call Favre and let him know about his diagnosis.
"I'm going to let him know, so he has a brother right behind him," Green said.

The cause of Parkinson's disease is not yet known. Early-onset Parkinson's is a diagnosis given to someone 21 to 50 years old and dealing with the disease.
Earlier this month, Boston University published a study , which cited that NFL players were four times more likely than the general population to die from neurodegenerative diseases, including ALS, dementia and Parkinson's disease.
