See the full story · 1 sourcesOne of Miami University’s iconic landmarks is now being fenced off as school officials also announce a time estimate for groundbreaking of a new campus arena at the same site.
Miami officials recently announced that construction site fencing is now being erected around Cook Field and its student sports fields and will be completed by Monday, Aug. 10.
Officials also said mid-September will see the official groundbreaking for a $281 million sports arena for basketball, volleyball and other activities at the site to replace the school’s Millett Hall.
Also, some of the student parking lots – the west and south lots — surrounding Cook Field will also be closed after Monday.
Cody Powell, Miami’s vice president of facility planning and operations, noted in the announcement that a portion of the Cook Field walking track will remain open for use outside of the construction fence for use by students and others.
Miami begins its fall semester classes at the main Oxford campus – and at its regional campuses in Hamilton and Middletown — on Aug. 24.
Robert Bell, Miami’s director of planning, architecture, and engineering, stated “the design development process for the arena is nearing completion (and) the final design is expected to be approved later this fall.”
The new sports venue will include a basketball arena, volleyball arena and practice courts.
The new facility, which will replace Millett Hall, is scheduled to open in fall 2028 at the Cook Field site along the eastern border of the campus, next to the school’s Ohio 73 entrance to the university.
Millett Hall has served as Miami’s main sports arena since 1968 and officials have said the facility has outlived its usefulness and is too expensive to renovate and update to modern building codes.
Currently $13 million in new student courts and activity spaces – located next to Millett Hall and at the existing Chestnut Fields sports area on Miami’s Oxford campus — are being constructed to provide thousands of students with new and enhanced intramural sports fields and playing courts as Cook Field is shut down.
Construction crews recently installed new synthetic sports turf at the Chestnut Fields site.
School officials said the new arena district — and its adjacent hotel and other buildings — are “intended to enhance student experiences and boost economic development, the arena will also serve as a venue for campus events such as commencements, concerts and other live performances, career fairs, and more.”
