WSL survival the primary target for Charlton Athletic says Hutton
Charlton Athletic midfielder Jodie Hutton says that the club’s primary target this season is to stay in the Barclays Women’s Super League.
The Addicks were promoted to the top tier after defeating Leicester City on penalties in a one-off play-off tie back in May.
Charlton Athletic were Barclays WSL2 leaders for most of the season but ended up needing to win the play-off to seal promotion. When speaking in a Charlton Athletic media session, midfielder Hutton said that the players showed their togetherness in finally getting over the line.
“We had a good season from the start,” Hutton said. “It comes from off the pitch, we are a very together team. It didn’t end how we wanted, going into the play-offs but after the Birmingham game, we just wanted to get on with it. We knew we had one more chance and we took it.
“It came down to togetherness and being on the same wavelength. It was good to get the win in the play-offs.”
Charlton Athletic go into their first Barclays Women’s Super League season as one of the relegation favourites. Hutton said that the South East Londoners’ target this season is very clear.
She said “If we are being honest, it’s to stay in the league. We are not going to say that we are targeting the top end of the table because everybody knows that’s unrealistic.
“We know that it’s going to be hard, so our main aim is to stay in the league and compete. Hopefully, we will do that.”
Charlton Athletic are known for their defensive qualities. Hutton says that The Addicks will look to bring those attributes to the Barclays Women’s Super League whilst continuing to thrive on an underdog mentality.
She said “We are quite a defensive team, we had to play on the counter attack [last season] and I think that’ll help us going into the WSL.
“We are going in as the underdogs, just like we did last year and we kind of like that because we want to prove people wrong.
“We’ve been working on our defending. Last year, we were a defensive team and that will help because we are used to that.”
