Upsets are a natural part of the high school football season and typically produce the most exciting moments of the week. Whether it's a national or regional power, there are teams that everyone is gunning to beat.
Some, like St. Francis Academy (MD), find a way to overcome that adversity and pull out a win that looked to be in jeopardy. Other programs aren't as lucky.
The first full week of the season saw a good number of programs ranked inside the USA TODAY Sports Super 25 rankings suffer unexpected upsets. This week's slate of action was no different.
Here are the Super 25 teams who weren't as lucky and left the week with a loss.
No. 23 Santa Margarita (CA) defeated No. 4 Centennial 21-20
In a similar fashion to last year's showdown between the school's this year's game between the Eagles and Huskies once again proved to be a back-and-forth affair.
Santa Margarita jumped out to an early lead and took a 14-67 lead into the half. Centennial answered back in the third quarter to tie things up but a pick-six by Santa Margarita's Ca'ron Williams put the Eagles up 21-14 entering the fourth quarter.
Centennial scored midway through the fourth quarter behind the arm of Jaden Jefferson but missed the extra point. That would prove to be the difference as Santa Margarita has now won their last four games against Centennial.
Allen (TX) defeated No. 16 Duncanville 26-7
Despite what Alabama quarterback Keelon Russell said regarding this matchup featuring his alma mater, the Panthers would not score 50. They could hardly get much going against an Allen defense that would bend but not break for a majority of the evening.
Allen sophomore quarterback Ty Snell threw a pair of picks in the win, but more importantly, led the Eagles on four scoring drives.
The Eagles led 12-7 at the half and pitched a shutout to secure the win. Allen scored twice in the fourth quarter, including a game-clinching touchdown run from running back Lyndon Spriggs with under two minutes remaining.
Lee County (GA) defeated No. 17 Carol City (FL) 23-20
After a half of play, it looked like Carol City went up to Georgia and would leave the Peach State with a dominant win over the Trojans. Miami five-star receiver commit Nick Lennear had a pair of first-half touchdown receptions and Carol City led 20-8 at the half.
Lee County would begin to mount its comeback in the third quarter with a passing touchdown just a few minutes into the half. The Trojans would score on the first play of the fourth quarter and convert a two-point conversion to take a three-point lead.
From there, they let their defense do the rest, keeping Lennear in check and sending Carol City home with its first loss of the season.
American Heritage (FL) defeated No. 24 East St. Louis (IL) 35-28 OT
Last week, the Patriots were on completely opposite sides in their first games of the season. American Heritage was dominated in a 24-7 loss to West Boca (FL), while East St. Louis scored 28 straight in the fourth to beat previously ranked Mount Carmel (IL) 42-23.
The Flyers would once again have to come from behind as the Patriots jumped ahead early and took a 28-7 lead into the fourth quarter. East St. Louis roared back, scoring 21 straight to send the game to overtime.
In that overtime period, the Patriots' defense got a stop, giving Texas junior quarterback commit Neimann Lawrence a chance to win it. He did just that, throwing his fourth touchdown pass of the night and second to Michael Stringer for the go-ahead touchdown.
