Tennessee's Vol Navy is one of 20 traditions nominated for the best in college sports.
"The San Francisco Giants and Washington Huskies have nothing on the University of Tennessee," the Vol Navy is described by USA TODAY Sports . "Sailgate in Knoxville is when a flotilla sets up outside Neyland Stadium. The tradition started in the early '60s when a play-by-play man cooked up the idea to come to the game via water rather than trying to find parking. And once that idea set in, the Vol Navy became a great college football tradition."
Readers can vote the Vol Navy as the best college sports tradition here.
The Vol Navy began in 1962 by former voice of Tennessee football George Mooney. He and a friend were the first to travel to football games by boat.
Mooney served as the voice of the Vols from 1952-67.
