The incident happened around 12:30 p.m. Wednesday near Girard Avenue.
A Tesla driver told Action News he was traveling westbound on the Schuylkill Expressway when his vehicle's cameras recorded the tire bouncing over the median and striking an SUV behind him.
The driver said he heard the impact but did not realize what had happened until he reviewed the footage.
It was not immediately clear where the tire came from or what vehicle it may have detached from.
Action News is working to determine whether anyone was injured in the crash.
