"I thought last year might be it," Rodgers said via ESPN after the Pittsburgh Steelers ' conditioning test, echoing the same sentiment he expressed in May that the 2026 season would be his last. "And then Mike [McCarthy] got hired, and I talked to the wife, and she said, 'You can do one more year.' I said, 'Well, we'll see if it works out.' And then it kind of all came together."
Most of Rodgers' success throughout his career came under McCarthy while they were both in Green Bay with the Packers.
Steelers wide receiver DJ Metcalf said he noticed a difference in Rodgers this year, noting he seems a little lighter going into this season.
"I mean, it just puts a weight off his back. He's just out there playing free, enjoying possibly his last year with his teammates, with a couple of close friends that he's made over the past two years.
"I think it's just a lot of weight off his shoulders right now. He's just going out there playing free," he said.
Rodgers made sure to let everyone know that this is indeed his last season and that he won't be coming back.
"No," he stated, shaking his head. "Zero debate. Zero."
And if you expect Rodgers to be on your television next year as an NFL analyst, you can forget that also. Rodgers has said he intends to retire and go riding into the sunset, never to be heard from again.
So enjoy, folks; we may never see the likes of Aaron Rodgers again- well, until the Pro Football Hall of Fame comes calling.
