See the full story · 1 sourcesAn offseason addition to the Indianapolis Colts' defensive front has the attention of defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo early on in training camp.
Just before the NFL's free agency period opened, GM Chris Ballard traded linebacker Zaire Franklin to the Packers in return for defensive tackle Colby Wooden, who has made a quick impact upon his arrival.
"I'm super happy with Colby," Anarumo said after Thursday's practice, via Locked on Colts . "He's, as you mentioned, he's a multiple position guy, which you know how this league is, the more you can do, the more valuable you are. And he brings a great attitude every day. Tough, strong, athletic. That was a great move by Chris (Ballard), and we lost a great player, but I think we got a great player, too."
In Green Bay last season, Wooden was primarily the nose tackle, even while being a bit undersized for that role in the 290-300 pound range. However, he brings a versatile skill set to the Colts' front, able to line up across multiple gaps.
As a run defender, Wooden was quite effective in that nose tackle role, ranking 38th out of 146 defensive tackles in PFF's run-stop rate metric.
And while his pass rush production won't leap off the stat sheet, that wasn't necessarily what he was asked to do either. With the Colts, the expectation is that we see Wooden moved around more, playing different gaps, and attacking more, which should generate more pass rush production.
With DeForest Buckner not yet participating in the 11-on-11 periods in practice, Wooden has been starting alongside of Grover Stewart.
