The 38-year-old Matthias Jaissle is officially announced as Newcastle United’s head coach on Wednesday. The German succeeds Eddie Howe after the English coach suddenly decided to leave the Magpies after an initial agreement to stay at the helm of the club.
Jaissle, who was linked with several European clubs since leaving RB Salzburg to Al-Ahli, finally ended his unexpected spell in Saudi Arabia after two Asian Champions League triumphs. He signed a long contract at Newcastle United until the end of the 2029/30 season.
“It is an incredible honour to become the head coach of Newcastle United. This is one of the biggest clubs in European football with a unique history, identity and fan base, and I look forward to experiencing this passion and attachment up close.” said Jaissle about his new club.
There will now be four German coaches in next season’s Premier League. Fabian Hürzeler (Brighton) and Daniel Farke (Leeds United) are now joined by the former Red Bull group coaches Marco Rose (Bournemouth) and Jaissle. Including the defending champion Mikel Arteta, five coaches hail from the world champions Spain.
