Last night, Andrew Painter gave the Phillies pretty much all they could ask for. Six innings where his only mistake was a two-run home run by Pete Alonso, Painter looked pretty good in his return to the major leagues. He was able to get some swings and misses on his stuff, not as many as maybe he would have liked, but still effective enough to keep Baltimore at bay.
The question is: where are you on Painter’s future with the team as far as 2026 goes? Is that one start enough for the team to anoint him the fifth starter the rest of the season? They have had some struggles at the spot and have been actively looking for another starting pitcher to add to the rotation on the trade market.
For me, nothing Painter did was bad at all, but it should not exempt them from trying to upgrade that spot in the rotation at the trade deadline. Maybe it only means they should be shopping in the rentals aisle of the market, but if there is someone available that is an upgrade, the team should look at it. If anything, maybe it means Painter doesn’t need to be moved in return for anyone in a deal.
