The New England Patriots are racing against the clock to prepare Gillette Stadium for their first game of 2026. New England is replacing the recently installed artificial turf after the playing surface failed the NFL and NFL Players Association’s independent testing protocol, according to ESPN’s Mike Reiss.
The Patriots are scheduled to host the Indianapolis Colts in their preseason opener Thursday night. That gives the organization only a few days to install a replacement surface and ensure it satisfies the league’s requirements.
The timing creates an unusual complication before a game that ordinarily would generate little concern.
Gillette Stadium Turf Fails Testing Protocol
Gillette Stadium temporarily featured natural grass while hosting World Cup matches earlier in the summer. That surface was removed after the final game, allowing the stadium to return to artificial turf for the Patriots’ season.
The first replacement did not pass inspection.
Patriots chief operating officer Jim Nolan told Reiss the organization now is installing an updated version of the field the team used during the 2025 campaign.
“The field we’re installing is the latest version of the field we took out in January,” Nolan said, per ESPN. “From a player perspective, it will be incredibly consistent with what they played on last year.”
The Patriots have not indicated that Thursday’s game is in danger of being postponed or canceled. The new surface still will need to pass the required testing before players take the field, however. That process will draw additional scrutiny because of the limited turnaround time.
New England also is scheduled to host the Colts for a joint training camp practice Tuesday. That session will take place on the Patriots’ practice fields rather than inside Gillette Stadium, providing the crew with additional time to finish the installation.

Patriots Cannot Afford To Rush Safety Decision
Replacing a field four days before an NFL game sounds dramatic, but the most important factor is whether the final surface is safe. The league has canceled preseason games because of field conditions in the past. The 2016 Hall of Fame Game between the Green Bay Packers and Colts was called off after problems with hardened paint created concerns about player safety.
A 2001 preseason game between the Philadelphia Eagles and Baltimore Ravens also was canceled because of an unsafe surface at Veterans Stadium. Those examples do not mean the Patriots are headed for the same outcome. New England still has time to complete the work and receive approval.
They do illustrate why the testing process cannot become a formality simply because kickoff is approaching.
Preseason games already carry significant injury risk for players attempting to secure jobs or prepare for the regular season. Asking them to compete on an improperly installed surface would create an unnecessary additional concern.
The Patriots should benefit from installing a field similar to the one their players used last season. Familiarity will not matter unless the surface meets every safety requirement, though.
Thursday’s game is scheduled to kick off at 7:30 p.m. ET. Until the replacement turf passes inspection, the condition of the field will remain one of New England’s most important storylines. The Patriots expected their preseason opener to provide the first real evaluation of the roster. First, they must make sure Gillette Stadium is ready to host it.
