NEW YORK CITY (WABC) -- Mayor Zohran Mamdani is expected to attend the September 11th ceremonies, despite calls from some critics.
While the city has been preparing for a presidential visit on the 25th anniversary of the terror attacks, as of now, President Trump is not expected to attend.
Instead, the administration will be represented by Vice President JD Vance.
Trump is expected to commemorate the day at the Pentagon in Washington D.C., and is expected to deliver remarks.
The September 11 Memorial stopped allowing speeches during the ceremony after the first decade.
President Trump also skipped the 20th anniversary, which was attended by the sitting President Joe Biden and two former presidents.
He instead visited a fire station and police precinct on the East Side.
Trump last attended the Ground Zero ceremonies in 2024, during that year's presidential campaign.
The morning after, he debated Kamala Harris, who was also there, along with Biden.
In a statement, the White House alluded to President Trump's desire to deliver remarks on 9/11:
"As a proud New Yorker, President Trump has spoken about his own experiences watching the horrific events of September 11, 2001. On the 25th anniversary of this tragic day, the president will remember those who were killed at the hands of evil terrorists, honor their loved ones, and pay tribute to the brave first responders who put their lives on the line to rescue their fellow Americans."
The National September 11 Memorial and Museum released their own statement:
"For more than a decade, the ceremony at Ground Zero has featured only family members solemnly reading the names of their loved ones. Elected officials of both parties have borne witness to this solemn occasion over the years, and we have been honored that every living President, including President Trump, has attended. Of course, President Trump is always welcome."
