Detroit — The Tigers made a roster move before Sunday's series finale against the White Sox at Comerica Park.
The Tigers called up outfielder Brett Callahan to take the roster spot of Trei Cruz, who was designated for assignment.
Callahan, 24, a 13th-round pick by the Tigers in 2023 out of St. Joseph's University, was scheduled to make his major-league debut in Sunday's game. He was scheduled to play left field and bat seventh.
Callahan bats left-handed, and split this season between Double-A Erie and Triple-A Toledo. At Toledo, he hit .271/.351/,338 one home runs and 17 RBIs in 36 games. He hit 12 home runs in 60 games with Erie.
Cruz, 28, a switch-hitter who was a third-round pick by the Tigers in the 2020 draft, has just five at-bats with Detroit this season, with no hits. He didn't play during this latest callup.
The Tigers lost the first two games of the series with the White Sox to fall to 4.5 games back in the division.
The series finale is set for 1:40 p.m.
