See the full story · 2 sourcesPadraig Harrington has been named a vice-captain for Europe’s 2027 Ryder Cup team, which will be staged in his home country of Ireland.
The three-time major winner joins Italian siblings Edoardo and Francesco Molinari on captain Luke Donald’s staff for the prestigious tournament , which is set to be held at Adare Manor in Limerick, Ireland, next September.
Harrington was notably part of the Europe team on the only previous occasion the Ryder Cup has been played in his home country, back in 2006, when Europe won at The K Club.
His extensive involvement includes representing Europe six times as a player, serving as vice-captain three times and leading the side as captain for the 2021 Ryder Cup, when Donald served as a vice-captain.
Expressing his surprise and delight at the appointment, Harrington said: "It’s something I didn’t expect. I honestly didn’t think I’d ever wear the European Ryder Cup logo again. So I’m very happy to be part of it.

Captain Donald lauded the appointment, remarking: "He brings a wealth of experience and I do love the fact that there’s a connection. He understands the Irish crowds and all that goes with having a Ryder Cup in Ireland. I think it’s going to be very special for him."
Donald is aiming to lead Europe to a third consecutive victory after previous triumphs in 2023 and 2025. After being thrashed 19-9 by Team USA in 2021 when Harrington was captain, Europe bounced back as Donald took over to win 16.5-11.5 three years ago in Italy.
Last year, Europe dominated the opening two days in New York but had to fend off a spirited USA comeback on the final day.
Europe eventually prevailed 15-13, with Shane Lowry hitting the put that ensured his team retained the Ryder Cup.
Next year promises to be another thrilling contest, with Donald able to call on Harrington and the Molinari brothers for support.
