CHICAGO – So much for old friendships.
Former Cincinnati Reds ace Luis Castillo put a seven-inning beatdown on his old pals in Chicago, making just his second start for the White Sox since getting traded from the Seattle Mariners at the trade deadline and assuring the Reds will finish their two-city road trip with a losing record.
Exactly 22 days since Castillo pitched seven innings in a quality start against the Reds in Seattle, he twirled another seven dominant innings to beat the Reds 5-0 on Wednesday night – the Reds' fourth loss in five games on a trip that started with a wrong-way sweep against the Nationals in Washington.
Dominant?
After Sal Stewart's one-out single in the first inning, Castillo retired 19 of 21 without allowing another hit, and recording out nine of his 10 total strikeouts in that span.
Three of those strikeouts belonged to Eugenio Suárez, a Castillo teammate both in Cincinnati and Seattle.
Reds starter Rhett Lowder pitched into the sixth inning, allowing only one run while he was in the game, on a Drew Romo homer with one out in the third.
Lowder, who has a 3.23 ERA over his past four starts, was charged with one more run with Julian Garcia gave up a two-run homer to the first batter he faced after replacing Lowder.
