Is Apple Pay Down? Users Report Issues With Mobile Payment App

Apple Pay appeared to experience service disruptions on Friday, with users reporting problems processing transactions and transferring funds, according to outage-tracking website Downdetector.
Reports on the platform spiked as customers said they were unable to complete payments through Apple's digital wallet service.
Just before 6 p.m. ET, nearly 1,400 Apple Pay problems have been reported. Downdetector's data showed that funds transfers and payment issues accounted for the majority of complaints. By 6:15 p.m., reported issues were at 856.
StatusGator, which monitors outages across major online platforms, also recorded a surge in Apple Pay reports beginning around 4:40 p.m. ET.
An X account, MiggiTheJeweler, wrote on X, "Coincidentally Apple Cash stopped magically working, and my $5K transaction is nowhere to be found?!"
When reached for comment via email, an Apple spokesperson directed Newsweek to its support page which states that there are issues with Apple Cash, which began at 4:19 p.m. "Some users are affected. Some users may experience issues with Apple Cash at this time."
Apple Pay allows users to make contactless purchases and online payments using iPhone , Apple Watch , iPad and Mac products. Apple Cash is Apple's peer-to-peer payment service, allowing users to send and receive money through Messages and Wallet. Although Apple Cash balances can be used with Apple Pay, the services operate separately and can experience different technical issues
Friday's outage is not without precedent. Apple Pay and related Wallet services have experienced intermittent disruptions in the past, with users occasionally reporting issues ranging from failed transactions and Apple Cash transfer problems to difficulties accessing Wallet features. While most outages are resolved relatively quickly, the incidents can temporarily leave users unable to complete purchases or send funds through Apple's payment ecosystem.
Many users affected by the Apple Pay disruption reported seeing an "Unable to Connect to Wallet Services" error message when attempting to access Apple Wallet or complete transactions. The message generally indicates that the Wallet app is unable to communicate with Apple's backend systems, preventing users from adding cards, verifying payment methods, or processing purchases.
While the exact cause of Friday's reported issues was not immediately clear, similar errors can occur during server outages or service disruptions affecting Apple Pay and related Wallet services.
