President Donald Trump published what appears to be an AI-generated video showing several explosions on Iran's Kharg Island, although Iranian sources did not indicate the island had been targeted by the U.S. military in renewed strikes over the weekend.
"Kharg Island being blown to smithereens!!!," Trump said in a post to his Truth Social platform late Sunday.
Kharg, sitting just 15 miles off the Iranian mainland, is crucial to Iran's already squeezed economy, accounting for 90 percent of Tehran's oil exports.
Washington and Tehran traded strikes on Sunday for the first time since late July as the U.S. tries to force Iran into a deal through economic pressure and sanctions.
The chief executive of the state-owned National Iranian Oil Company, Hamid Bovard, told Iranian media Trump's post was "laughable" and activity on Kharg Island was continuing as normal.
The U.S. Central Command, which oversees U.S. forces deployed in the Middle East, did not mention an attack on Kharg Island, and said it had taken "limited, precise action" against Iranian minelaying capabilities in the Strait of Hormuz.
U.S. CENTCOM spokesperson Capt. Tim Hawkinssaid the U.S. had struck two Iranian launchers on Larak Island, one of several Iranian territories in the Strait of Hormuz.
Iran's military said it had responded by attacking two Jordanian air bases with ballistic missiles and caused "heavy damage."
Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) separately said on Monday a tanker that had attempted to pass along the southern edge of the Strait of Hormuz was "stopped after being hit by two naval mines."
