Not surprisingly, he's had success regardless of what the team needs him to do on any given night. However, when he signed with the Philadelphia 76ers , ending a highly anticipated free agency stretch, the popular belief was that he'd slot right into the team's starting lineup alongside its already strong core . That's likely to still be the case, although it apparently could look different from what was initially expected.
With point guard Tyrese Maxey coming off a career year, the addition of Jaylen Brown, a healthy Joel Embiid and talented second-year wing VJ Edgecombe, James is expected to round out a core that looks championship-ready.
That'll still be the case, but as ESPN's Shams Charania reported, it may look slightly different than originally anticipated. According to the longtime NBA insider, the 76ers are reportedly planning to use James at point guard.
"We're going to be looking at some point-LeBron James this coming season," Charania said. "The Sixers, I'm told, are expecting LeBron James to play a good amount of time at the point guard position on offense. Initiating the game, the offense for Nick Nurse. Tyrese Maxey, last season, played a lot on the ball at point guard, and we know his prowess off the ball as a scorer...
...Think of a better player that can set the table for Tyrese Maxey, Jaylen Brown, Joel Embiid, VJ Edgecombe, there's all these players that can score, that can get the ball from LeBron James. The one season LeBron spent at point guard in his 23 seasons—the 2019-20 season. He led the league in assists, the Lakers won the championship that year, and we never saw point-LeBron again, until potentially this season. But the buzzword around the Sixers right now is 'sacrifice.'"

— ESPN (@espn) July 27, 2026 It's an interesting side note from Charania about the Lakers' success with James at point guard during the 2019-20 season. However, it's certainly intriguing, given Tyrese Maxey's success last season while playing the bulk of games on the ball as the primary point guard.
As Charania highlights, though, Maxey certainly has the ability to play off the ball, and if the Sixers do take this approach offensively, it should create plenty of great opportunities for him, along with Brown and Embiid.
