Danièle Sauvageau named GM of Canadian women’s hockey team
Hockey Hall of Fame inductee Danièle Sauvageau has been named the next general manager of the Canadian women’s hockey team through the 2030 Winter Olympics in the French Alps, Hockey Canada announced on Wednesday.
Sauvageau became the first woman inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame’s builder category in 2025 and just led the PWHL’s Montreal Victoire to its first Walter Cup championship. She also served as Canada’s head coach from 2000-02, leading the team to its first Olympic gold medal in women’s hockey at the Salt Lake City Olympics.
Sauvageau will maintain her position as general manager of the PWHL’s Montreal Victoire during the 2026-27 season. But, according to a press release, she is expected to join Hockey Canada full-time as both the GM and vice president of hockey operations for the national women’s program for the remaining three years leading into the 2030 Olympics.
Sauvageau officially replaces longtime Canada general manager Gina Kingsbury, who — along with head coach Troy Ryan — mutually agreed to part ways with the program in May. Both Kingsbury and Ryan’s contracts with Hockey Canada ended after the 2026 Milan Olympics, where Canada lost in the gold medal game against their American rivals. Team USA now holds an eight-game win streak against Team Canada.
“Throughout her career, Danièle has enjoyed tremendous success, and while we know there is a lot of work ahead for our National Women’s Program, we have a leader in place who is a proven winner and knows what it will take to be successful at the 2030 Olympic Winter Games,” Hockey Canada president and chief executive officer Katherine Henderson said in a press release.
“The explosion of women’s and girls’ hockey has created a need to be more aggressive with elite player development, and Hockey Canada is committed to being a leading organization that provides opportunities for more participants to develop in our system and hopefully wear the Maple Leaf as they represent our country.”
Sauvageau will be tasked with putting together her first major Canadian team at the November women’s world championships in Denmark — without captain Marie-Philip Poulin, who had knee surgery to repair a torn ACL and meniscus. Canada’s coaching staff for this season, according to the press release, will be announced in the coming weeks.
