The New England Patriots still have not reached a long-term contract agreement with Christian Gonzalez, but Mike Vrabel expects his star cornerback to be on the field when the regular season begins.
During an appearance on WEEI’s “The Greg Hill Show,” Vrabel was pressed about Gonzalez’s contract negotiations and his availability for New England’s Week 1 game against the Seattle Seahawks. Vrabel indicated that like always he expects all healthy members of the team to be "on the field for practice.". He understands the contract has yet to be resolved, and has "nothing new" to report, but is excited to get him on the field, as they prepare for Week 1 against Seattle.
Gonzalez’s contract, however, remains unresolved.
When asked whether he was leading the negotiations, Vrabel did not announce a breakthrough or provide a timetable for an extension. The coach’s focus remained on preparing Gonzalez to play rather than publicly dissecting the financial discussions.
That distinction is important. Gonzalez can be frustrated with the pace of negotiations while still fulfilling his responsibilities on the field.
Patriots Expected To Exercise Christian Gonzalez Option
Vrabel also said the Patriots are expected to exercise the fifth-year option in Gonzalez’s rookie contract. That would keep the cornerback under team control through the 2027 season, giving New England additional time to negotiate a long-term agreement. Gonzalez is scheduled to earn a base salary of approximately $2.26 million in 2026.

Gonzalez already has established himself as one of the NFL’s top young cornerbacks. He earned second-team All-Pro honors in 2024 and made the Pro Bowl in 2025. Through three seasons, the former first-round pick has recorded 145 tackles, 24 passes defended, two interceptions and one sack.
Gonzalez also shares an agent, Reggie Johnson, with Seattle Seahawks cornerback Devon Witherspoon. Seattle recently signed Witherspoon to a four-year, $132 million extension, creating an obvious comparison for the Gonzalez negotiations.
Witherspoon’s contract carries an average annual value of $33 million. Gonzalez and his representatives can reasonably point toward that agreement when discussing the price of a new deal with New England.

Gonzalez’s Week 1 Status Takes Priority
Gonzalez previously acknowledged being frustrated by the contract process, while Vrabel said players are entitled to feel however they feel about negotiations.
“I have conversations with Christian, and I understand that this is probably something that’s difficult,” Vrabel said after New England’s preseason finale, according to Pro Football Talk .
The immediate question is whether those negotiations will affect Gonzalez once the season begins. Vrabel’s comments Monday suggested the Patriots are separating the two issues. Contract talks can continue away from the field while Gonzalez prepares for Seattle.
New England needs him.
Gonzalez, Carlton Davis III and Marcus Jones give the Patriots an elite starting cornerback trio, but their depth behind that group is inexperienced. Karon Prunty, Channing Canada and Charles Woods filled out the cornerback room on the initial 53-man roster. A lengthy Gonzalez absence would place considerably more responsibility on those younger defensive backs. It also would weaken a defense already facing questions about its pass rush without Landry.
The Patriots have not solved Gonzalez’s long-term future, but Vrabel provided clarity about the short term. The expectation is that Gonzalez will increase his workload and play in Week 1. The contract discussion will continue until the two sides determine exactly how much it will cost to keep him in New England beyond the next two seasons.
