See the full story · 2 sourcesPHILADELPHIA — Eagles defensive tackle Jordan Davis approached the podium with a smile after the first day of training camp. But before any reporters could ask Davis a question, he had one for the media.
“How do we feel about LeBron being in town?” Davis said on Wednesday at the Jefferson Health Training Complex.
LeBron James signing with the Philadelphia 76ers has taken the sports world by storm. That includes the Eagles’ locker room.
James, arguably the greatest basketball player of the all-time, surprised everyone when he agreed to a two-year, $8 million deal to join the 76ers last Friday.
Typically, the Eagles are the No. 1 topic in town when camp kicks off. That hasn’t been the case. Thousands of sports fans across the city are still buzzing that the NBA’s all-time leading scorer will be playing his 24th season in Philadelphia.
The Eagles are excited, too.
General manager Howie Roseman said James can “come out to practice any time he wants.” Jalen Hurts and Saquon Barkley — two of Philly’s most popular and accomplished athletes — sounded like fans talking about “King James.”
“I think for what he represents in sports and sports culture, it’s huge,” Hurts said of James’ arrival. “It’s huge for the city of Philadelphia. It’ll be exciting to have a figure like that in the city. What he’s done, one of the greatest to ever do it. I’m excited to be a part of that.”
“I think the city of Philadelphia is a super cool place to be for sports with how involved the fans are,” Barkley added. “Having LeBron here is just great for the culture.”

James’ decision came a couple weeks after Barkley publicly pitched the 41-year-old star on joining the 76ers. Barkley downplayed any impact he might have had on Wednesday, not acknowledging that it mattered or that James even saw it.
Barkley was asked earlier this month at a youth football camp about the possibility of James chasing his fifth NBA championship with the 76ers.
“If you want to go out with a bang, I feel like a great spot would be in Philly,” Barkley said. “Bringing a championship to Philadelphia, you’d be remembered forever.”
Of course, James will be remembered forever regardless of what happens. But it is clear he’s signing up for a title push.
James joins Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey, Jaylen Brown and VJ Edgecombe to form arguably the best starting lineup in the NBA.
The Eagles are the only Philly franchise to win a recent title. Hurts and Barkley led a Super Bowl LIX run in 2024 after the Eagles won their first Lombardi Trophy in 2017.
The Phillies have two World Series trophies (1980, 2008). The Flyers haven’t won the Stanley Cup since 1975, and the Sixers haven’t captured an NBA title since 1983.
Everyone in Philadelphia will be hoping James can end the Sixers’ drought.
Well, maybe not everyone.
“Looks like the Sixers are trying to go win one,” said Eagles receiver (and Boston Celtics fan) DeVonta Smith. “Can’t be mad at that.”
