LOWELLVILLE, Ohio (WKBN) - Leading 21-0 at halftime, Columbiana survived three second-half touchdowns by Daniel Huff to escape with an opening-night victory over Lowellville, 27-24.
At the very end of the first quarter, Danny Mangiarelli put Columbiana on the board with a rushing touchdown to give the Clippers a 6-0 lead heading into the second.
A Jenson Nordquist touchdown run in the second extended that lead to 14-0 after a successful two-point conversion attempt.
A 45-yard touchdown pass to John Parks put Columbiana in control midway through the second, 21-0, and took that lead into the half.
Lowellville did not get on the board until the third quarter when Carter Hvisdak pulled in a touchdown pass from Ricky Willrich to cut the lead to 21-6, but the extra point attempt failed.
A 22-yard touchdown by Huff cut the lead to 21-12, but the two-point conversion attempt failed.
Early in the fourth, Huff scored again, this time from six yards out to cut the lead again, this time to 21-18, giving the Rockets 18 straight points to open the second half.
Nordquist's second touchdown of the game came late in the fourth, giving Columbiana a 27-18 lead, but Huff immediately returned the ensuing kickoff with 1:37 left in the game to cut the lead right back to three points.
But Columbiana recovered the next kickoff and was able to run out the remainder of the clock.
Columbiana (1-0) will visit Mathews in week two. Lowellville (0-1) will travel to Lisbon .
