Not only do you have to add players from both high school and the transfer portal every offseason, but you also have to put in the work to re-recruit your entire roster and ensure you retain your best players. With player retention being the name of the game, programs are trying to find ways to incentivize guys to stick around.
Colorado coach Deion Sanders recently weighed in on the matter, saying retaining top talent is easy — as long as you have the money.
“No, not if you got money,” Sanders said Thursday when asked if it's difficult to keep players in the building, per On3 . “I’m sorry, I’m just honest with you. … That’s what happens in today’s (college) football. Guys, do your homework, man. Check these rosters. Check how many kids are coming in now, even in winning programs. … Winning programs, 25-30 (new players).”
While that's certainly easier said than done, Sanders did benefit from an influx of cash upon his arrival in Boulder. That led to a nine-win campaign in Year 2, but after a 4-8 finish last fall, Sanders is hoping he struck the right balance between retentions and additions as he looks to get things back on track.
