Megyn Kelly calls out NFL for international Super Bowl plans: ‘Would be like celebrating July 4th in England

Every year, the Super Bowl is the biggest sporting event in the United States and has become a key part of American culture. However, it sounds like at some point in the future, that game could be played overseas.
During a recent interview, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell did not rule out the prospect of hosting the Super Bowl in another country sometime in the future, pointing out that there are international cities that could host the event.
Super Bowl Overseas?
During a recent interview with German media outlet RTL/ntv, Goodell was discussing the future of the league outside of the United States when he suggested that not only would he like to see an NFL team outside of the United States, but he would be open to a Super Bowl played at an international location.
“There are definitely international cities that could host something like that,” Goodell said. “But we would like to see an NFL team in such a city first.”
For nearly two decades, the league has made an intentional push to play more games overseas, playing games in the United Kingdom, Canada, Mexico, Germany, Brazil, Spain, Ireland, and Japan over the years. However, that has never included a Super Bowl.
‘What could Goodell be thinking?’
While Goodell has been consistent in his push for the NFL to expand internationally, it seems like playing the Super Bowl overseas could be a bridge too far for conservative commentator Megyn Kelly.
During a recent episode of her SiriusXM show, Kelly made it clear that she would not be in favor of this move, comparing it to celebrating the Fourth of July in England.
“Playing the Super Bowl outside of America would be like celebrating July 4th in England. What could Goodell be thinking? Football is a quintessentially American sport — created in America by an American, in and with the support of American cities,” Kelly said, via the New York Post. “Why would we ever celebrate its biggest, most exciting, most-watched moment (and give all of the revenues that come annually to an American host city) outside of our own country?”
For now, there are no concrete plans for any international city to host the Super Bowl, and it sounds like Kelly would like to keep it that way.
