This is the UFC 330 live blog for Edson Barboza vs. Esteban Ribovics, the main card lightweight bout Saturday at Xfinity Mobile Arena in Philadelphia.
This is the 33rd UFC appearance for Barboza (24-14), who has competed at 145 and 155 pounds during his 16-year run with the promotion. The Brazilian fan favorite is well-known for his thrilling striking duels and some of the most memorable knockouts in UFC history, but at 40, Barboza could be nearing retirement. He enters tonight’s contest on a three-fight losing streak.
Ribovics (15-3) is also known for his barnburner performances, at one point earning three straight Fight of the Night bonuses. In his most recent outing, Ribovics lost via submission to top 10 lightweight contender Mateusz Gamrot, but can add a notable veteran to his hit list with a win over Barboza. Of Ribovic’s 15 career wins, 12 have come by way of knockout or submission.

Round 1
Speedy start with both men throwing and landing in the pocket, mixing in quick punches with sharp leg kicks. Feels like someone could get rocked at any moment. Ribovics just letting his hands go, he wants to help Barboza go out on his own terms. That’s nice, I guess.
After a brief clinch, they’re back in the middle of the octagon, Ribovics trying to cut off the cage. They trade straight punches to the face. Ouch. Barboza’s face already showing the damage. This might not last much longer unless Barboza gets his hands up.
Ribovics’ jab is money. Barboza working to circle out of danger, but Ribovics is shrinking the cage, not much room to maneuver here. Ribovics flies in with a knee, Barboza avoids it but Ribovics with some good follow-up strikes. Ribovics mixing up his attacks beautifully, Barboza can’t figure him out. Ribovics just getting right in his face, not showing him much respect.
Big volume advantage for Ribovics and with accuracy, too. Barboza still firing back but he’s outgunned so far. Ribovics with a glancing punch there at the end of the round, Barboza sprawling to the mat, not sure if he was rocked or off-balance or injured in some way. Something wrong with his foot? There’s a huge gash and it might because there’s a leg injury. Yeesh.

Round 2
Nope! We ride on.
Ribovics just tagging Barboza, this is one-way traffic outside of the occasional Barboza jab or leg kick. His toughness is undeniable but that foot has to be affecting him. Ribovics just launching punches at Barboza’s head and ribs. He has Barboza backed up against the cage and he is just pummeling Barboza. The Brazilian vet refuses to go down so Herb Dean makes the right call and pulls Ribovics back, signaling the stoppage. Had to be done.

Post-fight
Ribovics calls Barboza his idol since he started training. He calls Barboza a legend and praises his career.
Barboza’s gloves are off and he looks incredibly emotional. Retirement definitely incoming.
Ribovics calls the win “bitter” but that this is something you know happens in the fight game. He calls for an opponent close to the top 15 or in the top 15 and says he has a lot more to show.
