Did Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham say she was considering retirement after her controversy with DiJonai Carrington of the Chicago Sky? No, that's not true: There is no evidence that Cunningham ever publicly stated that she was considering retirement. The claim is not supported by any official announcement from the team or by information on the Fever's website.
The claim appeared in a post and image (archived here ) by the @FeverUpdate account on X on Aug. 13, 2026. It read:
Sophie Cunningham says she is considering retiring from professional basketball and the WNBA at the end of the season following the altercation with DiJonai Carrington:
'We are all women. We should support each other, protect each other and treat each other like sisters. We should take each other's hands instead of constantly tearing each other down. Society is already divided enough, and it's heartbreaking to see players treating one another like enemies.
After what happened, I cried in my room for an entire day. It affected me more than people realize. I thought about whether this is still the life I want. For the first time, I seriously considered that retiring from professional basketball at the end of the season might be best for me.'

Lead Stories searched Google News (archived here ) and Yahoo News (archived here ) and did not find any matching reports from credible news outlets that Cunningham was considering retiring. The searches used the terms "Sophie Cunningham," "DiJonai Carrington," "retiring," and "considering."
There was no mention of Cunningham considering retirement on the Fever's news page (archived here ) on the team's website as of Aug. 14, 2026, at the time of writing.
