Auburn football notes, observations from first preseason practice
AUBURN — Finally, they're off and running.
An exact month away from kickoff, Auburn football began preseason practices Wednesday, Aug. 5, at the Woltosz Football Performance Center. It'll be a weeks-long period and about two weeks worth of practices, leading into the Tigers' season-opener against Baylor in Atlanta.
Here's glimpse of what was visible from the year's first practice, including rotational and individual notes, as well as the latest injury updates:
Injury updates from Auburn football's first preseason practice
The usual suspects, and at the very least, the players head coach Alex Golesh mentioned Tuesday were accounted for, by and large. Safety An'Quon Fegans was present and dressed out for full contact, and cornerback Shamar Arnoux was seen rehabbing during individual and team periods.
Some notables who weren't in non-contact protocol: Safety Champ Anthony, linebacker De'marcus Riddick, tight end Jonathan Echols and offensive lineman Stanton Ramil. All were seen actively participating in team or individual drills, and Ramil looked fluid while wearing a brace on his right knee.
The only surprise on the injury front was safety Sylvester Smith-Reed dressing out for non-contact participation. Any injuries to him had yet to be publicly reported.
Other notes, observations from Auburn football's first preseason practice
Edge rusher Da'Shawn Womack , who was arrested in June and charged with reckless driving, was present and participating at Wednesday's practice. When asked about Womack's status with the team while in Tampa, he said the punishment piece had been handled "internally."
During some early individual periods, offensive line ran a drill with four players at the line, and Cole Best, Cole Skinner, Jo Simmons and Ramil were first in the rotation.
Perhaps the most notable surprises of Wednesday were wide receiver DeShawn Spencer and running back Omar Mabson. Mabson was second in the pecking order of Auburn's running back rotation, taking hand-offs after Jeremiah Cobb, and Spencer consistently worked slot receiver with the first rotation during an offensive period.
