As the Steelers reported to Saint Vincent College in Latrobe, McCarthy revealed that Rudolph will be getting QB2 reps to start camp, while Howard and Drew Allar will split time at QB3.
Mike McCarthy says that Mason Rudolph will start off taking reps with the No. 2 team while Will Howard and Drew Allar will split the reps with the No. 3 team. Rodgers, obviously, the starter.
— Nick Farabaugh (@FarabaughFB) July 28, 2026 Howard, selected by the Steelers in the sixth round of the 2025 NFL Draft, was considered to be in pole position for the backup quarterback job in Pittsburgh. And considering the Steelers are more than likely to keep only three quarterbacks on the 53-man roster, the loser of the QB2 battle between Howard and Rudolph would likely be a trade or roster-cut candidate.
It’s still extremely early in training camp, with plenty of time for Howard to prove he deserves a spot on the Steelers’ roster over Rudolph. But as things stand right now, it’s basically Rudolph’s job to lose.
