When it's MLB trade deadline season, the San Diego Padres are typically big players one way or another. That likely won't change in 2026 — but A.J. Preller has much different decisions to make than usual.
While Preller's Padres have become known for their all-in mentality on the trade market, acquiring stars and big bats late in the summer with goals to make a playoff push, San Diego has been floating in no-man's land this season. The last two years, the Padres were clear deadline buyers, on their way to consecutive playoff trips. Now, sitting at a clean .500 as of Monday (53-53), things are far less clear.
On one hand, San Diego could buy, or stand pat, in hopes of making a playoff push. Or, if Preller isn't convinced on the Padres' chances, they may have the best trade chip on the market: closer Mason Miller, who has had a historic reliever season and will likely wind up with down-the-ballot NL Cy Young Award votes.
Should the Padres deal Miller while his value is sky-high? Or should they hold onto Miller, hoping their rotation and bats can pick up enough slack to make the postseason? Here's the case for both arguments on the two-time All-Star closer.

Why the Padres should trade Mason Miller
Simply put, in terms of relievers on the trade deadline market, the Padres could get a historic haul for Miller.
This season, he's posted rather silly numbers over 42 appearances: 80 strikeouts vs. 15 walks and 21 hits allowed in 43.2 innings, a 0.82 ERA and 27 saves. He's easily the best closer in MLB, and with him being under team control through the 2029 season, Miller would be even more valuable to another contending team.

He's been historically great, which is why he could be worth a historic amount in value.
Trading Miller would have to be somewhat of an admission by Preller that his 2025 deal to acquire the closer from the A's was a mistake — and while that's a tough pill to swallow, the Padres could also recoup the prospect value they lost in that trade. San Diego sent a haul of Leo De Vries, Braden Nett, Eduarniel Nunez and Henry Baez to the A's last year, with De Vries the star as a top-10 prospect in baseball.
Because Miller is a reliever, there's also an optimistic chance that the Padres trade him, receive a huge boost in their farm system, then the rest of the team, including the potential return package, continues playing well enough to reach the postseason without Miller. Closers can only impact games so much, and the Padres' path to contention doesn't have to rely Miller.
The Pirates, Mariners and Yankees are expected to be potential fits for a Miller trade, per Jon Heyman . If San Diego could pry a package including any combination of George Lombard Jr., Will Warren, Jasson Dominguez and Dax Kilby from New York, or of Jared Jones, Bubba Chandler, Seth Hernandez and Edward Florentino from Pittsburgh, it could be worth striking on Miller's sky-high price.
If the Padres choose to deal Miller, landing a high-upside, team-controlled starter would make a lot of sense, as they could continue their 2026 wild-card chase with an improved long-term outlook. Their decision may depend how much potential trade partners are willing to give up.

Why the Padres shouldn't trade Mason Miller
For one, the 2026 Padres are not yet done. This season has undoubtedly been disappointing so far, with stars like Fernando Tatis Jr., Manny Machado, Jackson Merril, etc. not doing enough to make San Diego a contender in the NL — but things change quickly in a baseball season. After all, the Padres are fresh off a sweep of the Marlins last weekend.
As things stand on Monday, July 27, the Padres are two games back of the Diamondbacks for the final NL Wild Card spot. They won't be catching the Dodgers in the NL West, already trailing by 14 games, but the Wild Card is still a very real possibility, especially for a team with as much talent as San Diego.
If the Padres trade Miller, they won't have the luxury of going into the ninth inning of high-stakes September games with an elite, shutdown arm available. Miller would be a real weapon in the postseason as well, putting the best reliever in baseball on the bright stage — and if the Padres could get there, he could even be asked to pitch more than one inning at a time to maximize their ceiling.

There's also the element of Miller's team control. Trading him while he's having a historic season makes sense in terms of value, but the Padres also likely expect to contend in 2027 and beyond — and with Miller being under team control through 2029, San Diego can hold onto him with the assurance it will have an elite bullpen arm for its next few postseason pushes, even if that doesn't happen this year.
