The self-proclaimed "football guy" is thrilled to be back at training camp, and when speaking with local reporters, he had quite the phrase to describe his quarterback.
When talking with Darren Haynes and Chris Hayre of CBS Los Angeles , Harbaugh revealed that his thoughts on star Justin Herbert, especially how important he is to the team.
“There’s no doubt about it; everybody has seen it,” he said. “Look to the 2025 season if you have any questions, or ’24 and ’25, we’ve won zero games without Justin Herbert being the guardian of victory in every single one of those games.”
"Guardian of victory" is a phrase that Harbaugh's used before, though when he was the coach for the Michigan Wolverines, it was how he described his own role on game day.
"Guardian of victory is probably the No. 1 job," he told reporters. "You have to be sure that the decisions you're making are complementary for all three phases. There's no offense. There's no defense. It's a we-fense."
Harbaugh has also called Herbert the "guardian of victory" before, noting that his avoidance of turnovers, sacks and other negative plays has been a big part of the team's success, as reported by Alex Insdorf of Bolt Breakdowns .
When talking with Haynes and Hayre of CBS Los Angeles recently, though, he indicated Herbert is growing into a quarterback who can do more than simply protect his team's chances of winning.
Instead, he's creating opportunities, something the stars on the Chargers' defense are usually known for.
“There’s times last year where he really took the team on his shoulders, so to speak,” he said. “Same way Derwin [James] does. We don’t win too many without him finishing it and doing the walk off on a bunch of those. And [Khalil Mack]. A lot of grit, a lot of investment went into last season to find a way to win those games. Like any investment … you make those investments, you want the dividend. Now’s the time to get some of those dividends back.”
