METAIRIE, La. — Carter Sternberger is an all-district, all-metro, and all-state linebacker who owns the Haynes Academy single-season tackles record.
What's more impressive than his numbers on the football field are his numbers in the classroom.
Carter carries a 4.9 GPA with a 31 on the ACT.
"Last year was my first year being a captain on this team. I was named the first captain before camp even started, and I've tried to uphold that in myself, even through this year in being named a captain again. I try to be the one that everybody else can look up to, that anybody can come talk to when they need it. Just that guy that everybody can look to when they're struggling. I know that I've had times when I'm struggling, and I don't really have a guy to look up to. So, I try to give that to everybody else," Sternberger said.
Carter's unselfish habits extend beyond the football field. He started an annual food drive to provide meals to families during the holiday season.
"What inspired it for me personally was that my favorite thing to do during the holidays is to share a meal with my family, and I wanted to share that with my community. So, I started my food drive last year to give that opportunity to others who are maybe less fortunate, and I plan to continue it this year, this December," Sternberger said.
A true student-athlete who plans to study mechanical engineering while playing college football.
"What's great about Carter is he's always looking to better himself and better the people around him. You would think that it's hard enough trying to maintain a 4.9, and getting a 31, and being the captain of the team. But he also works a part-time job. He has a charity. He's constantly training. He's doing anything he can to help his family and his community. He's a once-in-a-lifetime kind of player," said Haynes Academy head football coach P.J. Sprunk.
