With Mike McCarthy's arrival to Pittsburgh, the Steelers ' offense is set to feature some new wrinkles during the 2026 season despite the return of major pieces like Aaron Rodgers and Jaylen Warren. Beyond DK Metcalf, the composition of the wide receiver room will certainly be one of the biggest changes.
Not only is former Colts star Michael Pittman Jr. now around to form a one-two punch alongside Metcalf, but the Steelers are also hopeful for some development from their younger receivers. Rookie Germie Bernard will have a chance to make an immediate impact, and after dealing with injury issues in the past, Roman Wilson also projects as a clear X-factor.
The 25-year-old was selected in the third round of the 2024 NFL Draft. After health problems kept him off the field as a rookie, Wilson was still largely stuck on the sideline in 2025, totaling just 12 receptions and 166 yards over 13 games.
Early in Steelers training camp, though, there could be signs of a breakout for Wilson. On Friday morning, McCarthy told reporters that Wilson's versatility has been on display.
"He's done a hell of a job inside, and I haven't even talked to him about this yet, but I think we can start working him a little bit more outside, too," McCarthy said. "Because his vertical speed out there on the numbers, I think he has an excellent skill set for that, also. But he's done a really nice job. He can line up at X, Z and F, and so far, he's done exactly what we asked."

— Chris Adamski (@C_AdamskiTrib) July 31, 2026 This comes after Rodgers also praised Wilson earlier in the week . The veteran quarterback said Wilson is someone who has shown the new staff "a lot of great tape," and he expects him to "start to make some splash plays."

— FOX 53 (@fox53wpgh) July 31, 2026 While Metcalf and Pittman are slated to catch plenty of passes from Rodgers this season, Wilson could step into a multi-positional role with his speed. The former Michigan receiver hasn't gotten much of a chance to showcase his talent in the NFL quite yet, but the Steelers seem hopeful that will change in 2026.
