The Washington Commanders were thrilled when Ohio State linebacker Sonny Styles was available to select at No. 7 overall in the 2026 NFL Draft. It didn't take long for Styles' phone to ring with Adam Peters and Dan Quinn on the other end of the line, welcoming him into the fold.
Styles hasn't wasted a single moment since he was drafted to the Commanders and is already in contention to be the team's green dot linebacker , the linebacker on each team who directs traffic and calls coverage based on what the opposing offense is showing. After the team's practice on Thursday, Styles sat down with Kay Adams to discuss his role and the possibility of holding all the responsibility.

— Up & Adams (@UpAndAdamsShow) July 30, 2026 First, Adams asks what it means to Styles to be in the green dot conversation. "It means a lot," he replied. "I think when you get the green dot, it's the coach putting trust in you. But at the same time, we have a lot of guys who are fully capable of doing it. (There's) A lot of smart guys in the linebackers room, so whoever gets it, they'll be able to run the show, and they'll be good at it."
Whichever linebacker wears the green dot on his helmet is designated as the team's communication specialist. He has a radio in his helmet that receives defensive play calls from the coaching staff, which he then relays to the rest of the defense. Once the ball is snapped, though, all communication is cut off, and the players are left to trust their instincts to make plays. This responsibility is usually reserved for middle linebackers (MIKEs) because they have the best vantage point on the field.
Styles is a perfect candidate for this job, but as a rookie, it's a lot to take on. So why would he want to take on this responsibility as a rookie?
"For me, just being a linebacker, just feels nice to be able to run the show, be in control, make the checks, and things like that. It's kind of what I was used to in college. But like I said, we got a lot of smart players on the defense. There's a bunch of guys who could have that role, and it might be a role that we're kind of sharing between all of us. We're all smart enough to make the checks together; it's not just on one guy."
There have been a lot of questions about this Commanders' defense and whether they'll be ready to perform as a unit when the season starts in September because there are so many new faces. But every time one of them speaks to the media, it appears the players have swept these questions under the rug as an afterthought. They get along. They're smart. They all have a chip on their shoulder. And they all support each other.
Styles is already proving to be a leader on defense and in the locker room, and it won't be a surprise when he's awarded Green Dot duties before the season starts. The good news for the Commanders is that the other new faces on the roster all seem to be on the same page. Now they just need to prove that on the field.
