While late-summer optimism frequently fuels high expectations across NFL fanbases, national sports commentator Mike Florio believes any chatter framing the Pittsburgh Steelers as legitimate Super Bowl contenders is completely detached from reality.
Speaking on a recent episode of “ Pro Football Talk ,” the veteran analyst took direct aim at media outlets pushing overly bullish projections for Pittsburgh. "Some of these shows, it is just blatant pandering to fans. There's no analysis to back it up," Florio said. "The realest analysis I can give you about the Steelers is anybody that thinks they're going to win the Super Bowl this year is I almost said the f-word, nuts."
Florio pointed to an increasingly competitive AFC landscape, highlighting powerhouses like the Baltimore Ravens , Cincinnati Bengals , and Houston Texans , as more than enough reason to lower expectations. In his view, Pittsburgh remains far closer to a fringe playoff team fighting for the seventh seed than a dominant force capable of making a deep postseason run.
Co-host Chris Simms echoed that skepticism, questioning whether Pittsburgh even boasts a top-tier roster given unanswered questions surrounding offensive line play, schematic creativity, and aging core stars like Cameron Heyward and T.J. Watt. For Florio, crowning Pittsburgh as a dark-horse title contender before Week 1 is pure fantasy.
"I'm just telling you this idea Steelers are a potential Super Bowl team is laughable," Florio added. "It's laughable. But we'll see what happens."
While new head coach Mike McCarthy is focused on his process of developing a more balanced team, his track record ensures Pittsburgh will remain competitive. Yet, Florio’s critique serves as a blunt reality check on the massive gulf separating fringe playoff contenders from genuine Super Bowl heavyweights.
