For years, there’s been a running joke in the NFL that playing for perennial bottom-feeder teams like the New York Jets is comparable to doing time in jail.
And as it turns out, former Jets wide receiver Plaxico Burress says that’s actually accurate.
Burress played for the Jets in 2011, logging 45 catches, 612 yards, and eight touchdowns in 16 games. Though he only played with the team for one year, it seemed to take its toll on him.
During a recent interview with “The Joint Venture Show,” hosted by Craig Carton and Lil Wayne, Burress admitted that he had similar feelings playing in New York as he did when he went to prison for two years back in 2009.
“So, they’re both kind of similar because when I walked into prison my first day, I was like, ‘[Expletive] man you a [expletive] loser,” Burress stated . “And I had the same [expletive] feeling every day I walked through the door with the Jets. I was like, ‘[Expletive], I hope we can win this weekend.’ Loser.”
During his 11-year NFL career, Burress actually found his most success in New York, only he was playing for the Giants. He totaled 488 receptions, 3,681 yards, and 33 touchdowns in four years with the Giants, winning a Super Bowl and being a part of the team that ended the New England Patriots’ historic undefeated season.
Burress didn’t play in 2009 or 2010 because of his off-field issues, and when he returned to the NFL in 2011, he landed back in New York with the Jets — a stint that he seemingly wishes he was never a part of.
In Burress’ defense, he’s not the first receiver to describe his experience with the Jets in such a negative light.
The team has been ridiculed over the years because of poor decisions by ownership, poor coaching, and a long list of failed quarterbacks in the post-Chad Pennington era — a group that includes Mark Sanche, Kellen Clemens, Greg McElroy, Geno Smith, Michael Vick, Ryan Fitzpatrick, Bryce Petty, Josh McCown, Sam Darnold, Luke Falk, Trevor Siemian, Zach Wilson, Mike White, Joe Flacco, Tim Boyle, Aaron Rodgers, Justin Fields, Tyrod Taylor, and Brady Cook.
