It’s been a team effort for the Red Sox this year, with everyone contributing to what has become one of the hottest teams in the league. From aces to hot bats, Boston has plenty of assets.
The team has several role players involved in the game. Anthony Seigler has been one of the players who is a true difference-maker.
Last Friday against the Blue Jays, Seigler had four hits, including a home run, to help secure a 6-4 win. It was the Red Sox’s first win since losing their 15-game win streak against the Orioles. His contributions that night and throughout the season haven’t gone unnoticed.
"He's been tremendous," Chad Tracy said via Audacy . "He’s scuffled a little bit here recently, but comes right back and has a heck of a game. Takes a bunch of quality at-bats for us today. So, big spark."
Anthony Seigler becoming ‘spark plug’ Red Sox need
It’s been a “right place, right time” situation for Seigler.
Seigler got drafted by the Yankees in the 2018 MLB Draft, signed a minor league deal with the Brewers in 2024, and was traded to the Red Sox in a deal that sent Caleb Durbin to Boston. Durbin started the season slow, but has since bounced back, especially during the Red Sox’s big run.
The other half of that trade, Seigler, had quite a different path to superstardom. The man taken three spots in front of Triston Casas in the draft has hit safely in eight of the 16 games he’s started in July. In 30 games, four fewer than last year, Seigler’s slashing .260/.328/.433 with three home runs and nine RBIs.
Even when Seigler isn't starting, he's helping in some way. Whether that be offering advice, coming in when needed, like when recent pickup Curtis Mead got hurt, or helping rally the troops, he’s been there whenever called upon.
“It's similar to Willson [Contreras],” Tracy said about his energy via MLB.com . “He plays with an edge. He wants to win. I think that's the best way to describe it. The emotion you see is when he feels like he does something to contribute to the team to win a game; he gets fired up.”
With Trevor Story, Marcelo Mayer and Isiah Kiner-Falefa on the injured list, and Roman Anthony still not available, Seigler has become reliable on the field and at the plate.
Seigler’s hustle has earned him a nickname only meant for those who truly make a difference.
“Sparky," said pitcher Patrick Sandoval. "That’s our spark plug right there."
