COLUMBIA — South Carolina football will host Bowling Green for its 2028 season opener , the program announced on Aug. 28.
Though it's a referred to as a Week 1 game and no longer called Week 0, Aug. 26 marks the earliest game in program history for the Gamecocks .
It's also the first time these two teams face off.
The matchup was previously announced in May when the program agreed to cancel the home-and-home series with North Carolina. With both the ACC and SEC in a nine-game schedule beginning this season, the number of non-conference games are dwindling.
The last time the program had a game this early was in 2014, when it faced Texas A&M on Aug. 28.
South Carolina is opening this season on Sept. 5 with a 12:45 p.m. ET game against Kent State (SEC Network) followed by another non-conference home game against Towson on Sept. 12 (7 p.m. ET, SEC Network+).
Coach Shane Beamer is in his sixth season with the program, coming off a career-worst 4-8 record in 2025.
