With the deadline approaching, the Phils are neck-and-neck atop the National League East standings with the Atlanta Braves — a few months after replacing Rob Thomson with Don Mattingly as manager.
After falling short of a World Series despite reaching the postseason each of the last four years, will the Phillies finally break through this year to earn the franchises third World Series championship?
To do so, Phillies president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski and the front office likely will have to make some moves to improve the team at the deadline.

The 2026 MLB Trade Deadline is Monday, Aug. 3.

What is the MLB Trade Deadline?
The trade deadline is the last point during the season at which players on 40-man rosters can be traded from one club to another.
After this date, players on any team's 40-man roster must first pass through waivers before being traded.
Any player must be in a team's roster by Aug. 31 to be eligibly for the postseason.
Phillies team needs
Back of the rotation starter
Like the last few seasons, the Phillies roster is mostly set with the top of the rotation led by aces Cristopher Sánchez, Zack Wheeler and Jesús Luzardo.
However, the backend of the rotation was been a huge concern for much of the season due to struggles by veteran starter Aaron Nola and former top prospect Andrew Painter who was recently recalled to the club after spending six weeks in the minors.
Bullpen help
The bullpen, which was supposed to be a strength of the team, has also been a point of contention with unreliable pitching aside from closer Jhoan Duran from veterans such as José Alvarado and Orion Kerkering. Injuries have also plagued the pen with left-specialists Tanner Banks and free-agent pickup Brad Keller both on the 60-day injured list.
Lineup protection
Aside from stellar seasons from All-Stars Kyle Schwarber, Bryce Harper and Brandon Marsh, the Phillies lineup has struggled to consistently score runs. While shortstop Trea Turner and third baseman have turned it around after horrendous starts to the season, the Phils lack a righthanded bat in the middle of the lineup after free-agent outfielder Adolis García was lost for the season.
